This month the Woodlands Apartments Blog is giving you some help with writing (and keeping)
your New Year’s resolutions. New Year’s resolutions are infamous for not lasting very long. In this post, we have a few tips to help you achieve your goals and keep your resolutions all year long. We hope that you find our advice useful!
1.Reframe the way you think about your goals. Jeff Haden, a writer at Inc.com, suggests that achieving goals means thinking less about the goals themselves and more about the processes that will help you achieve them. He says, “When you focus on the practice instead of the performance, you can enjoy the present moment and improve at the same time.”
2.Throw a little pessimism into the mix. While we are all for the benefits of positive thinking, studies suggest that defensive pessimism can be an effective way to calm your anxieties and prepare for any challenge that might come your way. Defensive pessimists acknowledge the possibility of failure, but use that anxiety to take specific action to ensure that the worst does not happen. Dwelling on the negative can be discouraging, but planning for the worst can help you work through the muck when problems arise.
3.Take positive action. Positive thinking can help you envision achieving your goals, but it doesn’t give you much help when actually putting in the work to reach them. Instead of daydreaming by the window, put in some footwork. Act like someone who wants to achieve their goals. Changing your behavior can be much more effective than just changing your thoughts.
4.Become accountable. It’s hard to achieve anything alone. Working on a goal with a friend or a trusted colleague can help you achieve your goals by giving you someone to report to. You could even join a group of people who will help you push towards your goal. Dream of writing a novel this year? Join a writer’s group. Want to learn to cook? Take a cooking class with a partner who needs you to arrive each week. Having someone to report to takes your goal outside of yourself and raises the stakes of your goal.
5.Follow your passion. Don’t choose a goal you think you “should” achieve. Choose a goal that reflects what you are passionate about. It’s difficult to achieve a goal that you are making for other people. Choosing a goal that reflects your dreams and passions will help you stay motivated even when the going gets tough.
